At the heart of Washington, DC, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial stands as a symbol of civic memory — and a showcase of cutting-edge lighting technology. Central to the project’s success was LED Lighting Concepts, whose expertise in smart fixtures and integrated control systems brought Gehry Partners’ vision to life.

The Memorial’s four-acre plaza posed unique challenges: highlighting large-scale bronze sculptures, a 450-foot stainless-steel tapestry, and landscaped pathways while maintaining a cohesive, welcoming environment. LED Lighting Concepts provided custom LED fixtures and smart controls, enabling L’Observatoire International to orchestrate the lighting as an integrated experience.
By leveraging programmable controls and precision lighting, LED Lighting Concepts allowed the illumination of individual elements — from the intricate textures of the woven tapestry to the bronze figures — without creating glare or compromising the ambient landscape lighting. Low-level pathway lights, bench-integrated illumination, and backlit trees were all seamlessly coordinated to maintain visual harmony across the plaza.
“Our systems give designers full control over intensity, color temperature, and timing,” says a representative from LED Lighting Concepts. “This level of flexibility was critical for a project that balances monumentality with intimacy, allowing the Memorial to feel both grand and approachable at night.”
The smart lighting solution also extended beyond aesthetics. Streetlighting and surrounding infrastructure were adapted to align with the Memorial’s palette, creating a cohesive, energy-efficient environment that blends civic utility with architectural intention.
Through LED Lighting Concepts’ technology, the Eisenhower Memorial illustrates how advanced LED fixtures and smart controls can transform public spaces, giving designers the tools to highlight detail, guide visitors, and craft experiences that evolve from day to night.
