Conrad - New York

In Lower Manhattan, the award-winning Conrad New York Downtown stands as a bold reinvention of a once-unremarkable building in Battery Park City. Anchored by a 13-story mural by Sol LeWitt, the transformation demanded more than renovation — it required a lighting strategy capable of activating architecture, art, and atmosphere simultaneously.

At the center of that effort was LED Lighting Concepts, whose advanced LED solutions helped translate the multidisciplinary design vision into a cohesive illuminated experience.

Goldman Sachs, in partnership with Hilton Worldwide under the Conrad Hotels & Resorts flag, assembled a dynamic design team led by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF). Lobby interventions by Monica Ponce de Leon introduced suspended geometric installations inspired by LeWitt’s gestural mural, while Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects choreographed sculptural furnishings that move guests fluidly through the atrium.

To bring this layered architectural environment to life, lighting needed to do more than illuminate — it needed to sculpt space. Working in collaboration with L’Observatoire International, LED Lighting Concepts provided precision LED fixtures that enhanced the dimensionality of the suspended string installations, clarified sightlines across the 13-story atrium, and ensured the Sol LeWitt mural remained the visual anchor without overwhelming the space.

By leveraging advanced LED technology, the team was able to carefully balance intensity, beam control, and color consistency throughout the lobby’s monumental volume. The result is an environment where light reinforces movement — shifting as guests ascend escalators, cross faceted balcony bridges, or gather within the curved lounge groupings below.

“Our goal is always to give designers exacting control while preserving architectural integrity,” said Ginger Jamrog from LED Lighting Concepts. “In a space as vertically dramatic as Conrad’s atrium, precision was a non negotiable. Every fixture had to support the art, the architecture, and the guest experience simultaneously.”

Beyond the atrium, LED Lighting Concepts’ solutions extend into conference spaces and guest environments, supporting the hotel’s dual identity as both a luxury retreat and a business destination. Lighting enhances walnut textures, millwork details, and material transitions while maintaining energy-efficient performance aligned with the project’s environmental goals.

Through LED Lighting Concepts’ expertise, the Conrad New York demonstrates how integrated LED systems can transform complex architectural spaces — revealing art, guiding circulation, and shaping atmosphere from floor to ceiling.

In a district once defined by visual monotony, the hotel now carries a new identity: layered, dynamic, and unmistakably alive after dark.

Award-Winning Impact

The lighting strategy contributed to national recognition, including:

  • IES Illumination Award of Merit

  • IES Illumination Award of Distinction

  • America’s Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS) Recognition

These honors underscore the success of the collaborative effort between design, architecture, and advanced LED technology.
